Cow is in everything, therefore there is no such thing as a vegan. That statement is a little over the top, but it does make a kind of sense when looking at the processed state of almost everything on the market today. I came across this chart on Streakr and although it makes rather sweeping statements about the ingredients of many common everyday things, it is fair to say say that there are vegan alternatives for pretty much everything listed here.
What got me about this chart is that you forget about how our food, and even clothes, are made. If you spend a lot of money, and look really hard, you can find clothes made out of natural cottons, medicines made out of the plants they are based on, and so on… but it does cost you. It actually makes me a little ill now that part of the daily/ weekly shopping trip consists of closely reading the ingredients listed on the back of boxes (the fact that it’s coming out of a box is a give-a-way that maybe you shouldn’t be eating it!), and that after reading those ingredients, you still don’t have a clue about what’s in the damn thing!
A great article/ list came from one of my Heros, David Suzuki called The Dirty Dozen. I recommend checking it out, even printing a copy and taking it with you for a while, as it talks about the 12 most dangerous ingredients, found in almost EVERYTHING. It mainly deals with cosmetics, creams and such, but you would be surprised where you will find these things. As a new Father, I was searching for the right cream for this, wipes for that etc. and was amazed at the nasty stuff we unknowingly put on/in our bodies. Disposable diapers are the WORST… try cloth diapering (It’s cheaper, better for the environment, and looks pretty darn cute too).
I guess the point is, ladies and germs, is to be aware of what you buy, eat, and wear. Care about yourself, because most manufacturers have other interests at heart, and yours fall pretty far down the totem pole.
