I’m a fan of Electrolux Design Lab, and the many entries that have been submitted to push the envelope on futuristic designs, and usability in the home. Check These cool appliances and this amazing iPad-like/ Terminator 2 bad guy cooktop.
LivingLight was designed by Michael Oechsle. It is a bio-powered luminaire and herb garden for indoor living spaces. Its Entry in Electrolux Design Lab 2012 reached top 80 for global nominees.
The Living Light hangs from the ceiling and has four light panels with OLEDs. The herbs or plants hang from the bottom, adding to the style and functionality of the piece. The herbs are watered through an ingenious gravity based system, that slowly infuses the soil with enough moisture for the plant via a reservoir located at the top.
This light also requires no outside source of power. OLEDs are extremely efficient, and the electrolytes in the soil create enough energy to run the lamps (although it may not be bright enough to conduct at-home surgeries… but really… who DOES that???)
