More than 1/3 of Americans are obese, and obesity is the leading preventable cause of death worldwide. Part of the problem is diet, but also a huge part of the problem in America is serving sizes. Here is some comparative research via infographic on serving sizes around the world, showing (not surprisingly) that waist size and portion size go hand in hand.

- Reports show foreigners gain 5-10lb weeks after adopting a typical American diet.
A really good idea is to start doing “family style” dining and use small side-plates or bowls. Living in Asia has shown me that you will eat less if you take smaller portions, even if you go back for seconds or thirds. By doing family style Asian dining, you will also have a lot more fun as there is more communal activity and thus more interaction, instead of head down fork to mouth from a single plate. You can slice the meat as well, prior to serving, which usually will mean you will take less. Most people will finish that chicken breast rather than save a small piece.
