Japan’s fake food industry: Plastic delicacies
The Japanese are known for their beautifully precise and elegant dishes… even their fake ones. The plastic models are mostly handmade from vinyl chloride and carefully sculpted to look like the actual dishes. The models are custom-tailored to restaurants and even common items such as ramen will be modified to match each establishment’s food. During the molding process, the fake food ingredients are often chopped up and combined in a manner similar to actual cooking.
The idea is to really get you interested in the dish, and they feel it helps to see the food they’ll be getting, instead of just reading about it. So, at the end of the world, there will be cockroaches, ski boots, and plastic entrees. I wonder what the aliens will say…
