Banana ketchup is a thing. It actually exists. Some combinations seemed destined to go together, but bananas and tomatoes have never been a pair I would have considered as a couple. When I first heard about banana ketchup, I had an initial WTF moment (as to be expected) and then began to imagine the flavour, and what it may actually be used for besides complete and utter novelty.
Fish! Why not? It has a sweet and tangy flavour, and that is often a nice touch with fish. I then proceeded to see what was out there on banana ketchup, and sure enough… it actually is an incredibly popular condiment! Whereas I stumbled onto this as an oddity, it seems to be a staple!
Banana ketchup is actually a Philippine sauce that is used to compliment almost any dish… from omelettes, burgers and fries, to… you got it… fish. It is “a popular condiment made from mashed banana, sugar, vinegar, and spices. Its natural color is brownish, so it is often dyed red to resemble tomato ketchup. Firebox is selling banana ketchup at around ten bucks, but some fans are telling me you can pick it up in the global section of many import grocery stores for only a couple of dollars.
